The Procedures In Gastric Banding And Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgeries

By Raymond Meyer

Bariatric surgery is a type of surgery which is usually performed to people that have obesity problems. There are two weight loss surgeries to be considered and these are the laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding and the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. According to some researches, these procedures may cause a long term weight loss, diabetes recovery, improving the factors of cardiovascular risks, and also reducing mortality.

These two surgical methods can be only recommended for a person with obesity and those who have a 40 BMI or the body mass index. These methods are also for people with obesity having a 30 BMI or having some major medical conditions like having diabetes. And this would literally mean that people having a 30 or more of BMI become candidates for the gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy surgical operations.

The adjustable gastric band is often called as the lap band. This is procedure where in there is a silicone device placed around the stomach, on its top portion in order to treat obesity. The main purpose of doing this is for slowing the consumption of food, and as a result, the amount of food that is consumed will be reduced.

An individual may achieve and sustain his or her weight loss. It is done by selecting the right healthy food options, food limit intake, reduce appetite, and also by the food progress from the top to he bottom portion of stomach digestion. However, this may only be applied for people who have tried proper diet and proper exercise before the surgery.

According to a research, this surgery type is not an easy option for those people that suffer from obesity. And the reason for this is due to the drastic steps being performed and the involvement of severe risks and pain like some other surgical operation types. However, the procedure is less invasive and patients can remain in the hospital for just a few days after the surgery. Some other advantages include faster recovery, have smaller scars, and lesser pain unlike other methods.

Lastly, not involving the removal of some stomach parts, movement of intestines, and involving staples is another important advantage of this method. Biocompatible materials are being used, thus, there will no harm when placed inside a persons body. Not all patients who are obese become automatically candidates for this. Those with extreme obesity and those having abdominal surgeries previously have some different kind of approach.

The sleeve gastrectomy is the other kind of surgical procedure where in weight loss is performed through removing large stomach parts near the curvature area. By this, the stomach size will be reduced for about 15 percent of normal size. And thus, resulting to a sleeve or tube like form.

This type of procedure for loss of weight is a very common option in New York. In this procedure, there is a longitudinal removal of stomach parts in the antrum for about 5 to 6 centimeters to the fundus which is close to the cardia. The ideal size of the remaining stomach is approximately 150 milliliters.

The surgery are also applied to children and adolescents. Based on some studies, there is a large loss amount of weight in ages five to twenty one years. Complications may occur after conducting the surgery which include sleeve leaking, vomiting, esophageal pain, blood clots, blood infections, etc.
