Winning the Inner Game of Weight Loss Part 2

When we plant a rose seed in the earth, we notice that it is small, but we do not criticize it as "rootless and stemless." We treat it as a seed, giving it the water and nourishment required of a seed. When it first shoots up out of the earth, we don't condemn it as immature and underdeveloped; nor do we criticize the buds for not being open when they appear. We stand in wonder at the process-taking place and give the plant the care it needs at each stage of its development. W. Timothy Gallwey
In part one of this article, I talked about how your overall level of success in weight loss depends on your ability to master your inner game. The inner game is how you view yourself and the external world generally. How effective you are in implementing your plans and achieving your goals. I mentioned that no diet, exercise or weight loss technique could overcome the pull of disempowering thoughts. When you are aware of your thoughts, actively managing what and how you think about, you change your actions and ultimately your life.
Start by accepting and seeing yourselves for what you are. As the famous saying goes ", the truth will set you free". Next thing to do is start putting you first. Putting you first not in a narcissistic way but by taking care of yourself physically, spiritually and emotionally. Taking care of yourself by applying will power, taking consistent action, using positive thinking, and a large dose of self-control to achieve your goals.
Be aware of destructive, self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviors as well. Some of you may need professional counseling to be able to do this. Take an inventory of your current strengths and weaknesses. Make a serious decision to accept who you are currently. Think about where you want to be. Think about any areas you wish to improve on, and work on these as you go along.
Use the power of positive affirmations to improve your mental image of yourself. Make a decision to once and for all to stop the negative and derogatory self-talk that pops in your mind from time to time. You can create the self-image that you want for yourself. You can act consistently with your new self-image until it becomes your new reality. Start visualizing your life as you want it to be. Visualization is a powerful bridge that connects where you are right now and where you want to be.
Use mistakes as a learning opportunity, don't beat yourself up over your past mistakes. Use your mistakes as a way to improve yourself. Face fear and uncertainty head on and take small steps toward your goals despite of them.
Learn to be happy. Be grateful for what you have accomplished in your life. Keep a smile on your face even when things are not going the way you want. Act in a confidence manner and with practice you will become more confident.
Pick people that have good self-confidence as your role model and emulate them. Avoid dream killers and people that want to sabotage your weight loss effort. Having supportive people cheering you on is one of the most important factors in your weight loss victory. More importantly acknowledge and celebrate your achievements.
Learn how to manage stress effectively. Stress is detrimental to your self-discipline and will power. Make sure you get plenty of sleep. Lack of sleep will adversely affect your self-discipline.
Plan ahead and prepare yourself for what may derail your weight loss goals. Plan for contingencies. How will you deal with temptations before they arise? Remove all temptations for overeating from your environment. Be careful when you are tired or hungry, these situations make you more likely to break your self-discipline.
